How to Create a Site and Upload with Dreamweaver™
Important
Your initial folder structure is very important when creating a Site with Dreamweaver™. You will need to create a folder that contains all the files and folders for your web site. All files and folders contained within this folder will be uploaded to the web server, but the folder itself will not.
Creating a Site within Dreamweaver™
1. Open Dreamweaver™
2. Go to Site > New Site
3. In the window that opens click the Advanced tab.
4. In the Site Name field give your Site a name. (This is not the title of your actual web site, only a name that Dreamweaver™ uses for Site management.)
5. For Local Root Folder browse by hitting the folder
icon and locate the folder that you placed all your files and folders for your web site.
6. For Default Images Folder browse to the images folder whithin your local root folder.
7. If you have a domain name for your web site enter it in the HTTP Address field, but otherwise you can leave it blank.
8. Keep Enable Cache checked.
9. Now click to the Remote Info item on the left hand side of the window.
10. The default Access will be None, but you will want to set this to FTP.
11. In the FTP Host field enter either your domain name (if it has fully propogated) otherwise use the server name contained within your temp URL (ie. dm4.inmotionhosting.com).
12. Now this is important. In the Host Directory field enter /public_html/ as this is the root folder on the web server where all files and folders must be uploaded. If this field is any different your site will not be seen when people go to your domain.
13. For the Login field enter your user name and for the Password field enter your password. You can check the save box if you want Dreamweaver™ to save your password so you don't have to enter it each time you upload.
14. Leave all other boxes unchecked unless you know what you are using them for.
15. Press the Test button to make sure that you have entered all fields correctly and if everything is right you should get the message below. If you receive any other message check your field entries once more and try again.
16. You can now press OK and your Site is created. On to uploading.
1. Once your Site is created within Dreamweaver™ you can begin to upload your files.
2. On the right hand side of the screen you should see a menu like the one to the right. If it looks different click the Files arrow to open up the Site bar. In this window is a list of all the files contained in your site.
3. To upload all you have to do is select the files you wish to upload and press the up arrow
also called the Put button. Dreamweaver™ will now upload all the files you selected. It may ask you if you would like to include dependent files. What this is asking is if you would like to upload all files that are referenced within any HTML files you are uploading (ie. images, or linked pages). If you are putting the entire site this may not be necessary.
