InMotion Hosting's SPAM Protection Guide

Enabling Spam Assassin

Spam Assassin is the first line of defense that you have here at IMH when it comes to junk mail. This tool uses a points based system called "hits" to tag email as SPAM. Certain characteristics of email are awarded higher points and if an email exceeds the maximum required hits it is tagged as SPAM. Spam Assassin is available on all accounts and must be enabled from your control panel. Follow these steps to enable Spam Assassin:

1. Login to your control panel (http://www.yourdomain.com/cpanel)

2. Click on the Spam Assasin icon. Cpanel SpamAssasin Icon

3. By default Spam Assassin is disabled. To enable it click the "Enable SpamAssasin" button. Enable Spam Assassin Button

In order to maximize the power of Spam Assassin, we suggest you setup a Filter/Message rule in your mail client. This will keep junk mail out of your inbox. Please consult your help documentation for specific guidelines pertaining to your email client.

For Outlook Express users please use following instructions:

1. Go to Tools > Message Rules > Mail

Tools > Message Rules > Mail

2. You will be presented with three sections of check boxes where you will setup the conditions for your rule. In the first section you will want to select Where the Subject Line contains specific words. In the second section you will want to choose Move it to a specified folder.

3. In section 3, click on the link that says contains specific words (see above) , and add ***SPAM*** to the text box as shown below, then click Add and OK.

Type Specific Words

4. In section 3, click on the link that says contains specific words, and either select an existing folder you have created earlier, or, as is shown in the example below, create a new folder to receive the spam.

New Folder

5. Finally, in section 4, give your message rule a name so you can find it again, and click OK (Below is what a completed filter will look like).

Name of the rule

6. Once you have completed these steps, click OK and your Message Rule is created. This will allow for proper identification and filtration of SPAM.

These same concepts are used when setting up filter rules in nearly all mail clients. For specifics on your mail client, consult the documentation and look for help on filtering.

To help further reduce you SPAM levels, you may want to try BoxTrapper.
